Will Counter-Strike 2 be playable on Steam Deck?

Counter-Strike 2 has finally been revealed by Valve after several weeks of speculation around the same. Prior to the announcement, data miners were able to spot changes in the databases that read “today” building upon the hype for the former.

Valve’s highly anticipated “Counter-Strike 2” is set to make its debut with a limited test starting today. The game promises a complete overhaul to every system and every piece of content, bringing with it the largest technical leap forward in the history of the franchise.

Counter-Strike 2 would be released this summer alongside a promise of an “overhaul to every system, every piece of content, and every part of the experience.”

Beginning today, players will have access to beta-test the new iteration of Counter-Strike. Valve also released a FAQ guide for the CS2 closed beta which says the latter would be awarded to players who have a good conduct score across their matches.

Now the question arises, will Counter-Strike 2 be available to play on the Steam Deck? As opposed to “whether” or “not,” a better question would be “how” it plays out.

Both Counter-Strike: Source and Global Offensive, published by Valve, made use of the Source 1 engine. To avoid upsetting the competitive esports scene, Valve allowed CS: GO to continue using the older technology while it transitioned to Source 2 and released Dota 2 and Half-Life: Alyx on the newer platform.

Unfortunately, Source 2 has not yet been given a thorough workout on the Steam Deck. Even though it hasn’t been verified, you can bet that Valve will make sure Counter-Strike 2 is playable on the Steam Deck. We have no doubt that Counter-Strike: Global Offensive will operate smoothly on the Steam Deck, despite the fact that its maximum resolution is limited to 1280 x 800 when the ship is not docked.

The games published by Valve and a lot of other developers are tested to work on virtually every platform. This will help people in developing countries or places where internet cafés are popular but where access to a computer may not be readily available.

The Steam Deck is likely the best method to play Half-Life: Alyx on the go, given the availability of Source 2 mods for the game and the already impressive performance for much more demanding games.

The only drawback is that you won’t be able to use a mouse and keyboard, but whether Valve plans to divide the player base between those who prefer to play with a gamepad and those who prefer to use a mouse and keyboard remains to be seen.

Counter-Strike 2 is set to launch this summer with the Beta Testing already handed out to players who qualify the early bird as read in the FAQ published by Steam.
